Naples’ Centro Direzionale Metro Station

The Centro Direzionale Metro Station in Naples, designed by the Spanish architecture firm Miralles Tagliabue EMBT, is a striking example of how contemporary design can harmonise with historical context. Situated in the Centro Direzionale district—originally planned by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange in the 1970s—the station aims to revitalise an area that has long been criticised for its lack of integration with the rest of the city.

A Fusion of Nature and Urban Fabric

The station’s most notable feature is its undulating wooden roof, constructed from laminated timber. This organic form contrasts sharply with the rigid geometries of the surrounding high-rise buildings, introducing a sense of warmth and natural fluidity to the urban landscape. The design draws inspiration from Naples’ volcanic topography and historical architecture, creating a space that feels both contemporary and deeply rooted in local identity.

Enhancing Public Spaces

Beyond its architectural significance, the station serves as a catalyst for urban regeneration. By providing shaded areas and integrating green spaces, it transforms the previously underutilized piazza into a welcoming public realm. The incorporation of natural light through skylights reduces the need for artificial lighting, promoting sustainability and enhancing the commuter experience.

Integrating Art and History

As part of Naples’ “Art Stations” initiative, the Centro Direzionale station includes artistic elements that reflect the city’s rich cultural heritage. The interior features stylized silhouettes inspired by ancient Pompeian frescoes, connecting daily commuters with the region’s archaeological past.

A Model for Sustainable Urban Design

The Centro Direzionale Metro Station exemplifies how thoughtful design can address multiple urban challenges—enhancing connectivity, revitalizing public spaces, and honoring cultural heritage. Its successful integration of architecture, art, and sustainability offers a compelling model for future infrastructure projects in cities worldwide.
